Thoughts on the Calgary Expo Guest List (so far)

I’m happy to see the list of new Calgary Expo guests that came out Tuesday! Here’s my top picks so far…

Nathan Fillion – Firefly, Castle, Dr Horrible
Kevin Sorbo – Hercules: The Legendary Journeys
Will Friedle – Batman Beyond, Boy Meets World
James Marsters – Spike (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
Colm Meaney – O’Brien (Star Trek TNG and DS9
Linda Larkin – The Voice of Princess Jasmine from Aladdin
Mara Wilson – Matilda, Mrs Doubtfire
Keith Tucker – One of the guys behind Animaniacs

While I like the guest list we have at the moment, I am surprised about a couple of things not found there.

– No cosplay guest announcements yet… Not a showbreaker, but they usually have about three or four cosplay guests every year. In the past, they’ve had Jessica Nigri, Ivy Doomkitty and Lindsay Elyse. Where are the celebrity cosplayers on the guest list? I can think of some great additions we haven’t seen at the show (Lady Kayleen, Abby Dark-Star, Kamui Cosplay, Kelly Jean, Rosanna Rocha Cosplayer, Knightmage, Living Ichigo all come to mind.)

– No wrestling guests! Last year, there wasn’t a wrestler at the show, which was surprising because there was always wrestlers in attendance in past years. Some of the big names we’ve had include Mick Foley, Edge, Trish Stratus and Bret Hart. Definitely a missed opportunity here if they don’t get somebody. Maybe bring in Kane or the Big Show? Ric Flair, The Nature Boy? Really, what have they been doing in WWE lately?

– Few voice actors… Will Friedle and Linda Larkin are great additions and I can’t wait to meet them, but I’m surprised there are none involved in anime. I’d also like to see them increase the number of voice actors involved in video games. I’d love to see people like D.C. Douglas (voice of Albert Wesker in Resident Evil), David Hayter (Voice of Solid Snake in Metal Gear Solid), Bryce Papenbrook (so much anime) and Vic Mignogna (Full Metal Alchemist, Broly of Dragon Ball Z fame)

– No representatives from the following shows… Star Wars, The 100, Supernatural, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Prison Break, Gotham, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter. All shows that we’ve had guests from in the past and I would love to see involved again. I realize you can’t have the same shows involved every year, but they are big fan draws! I also haven’t seen a guest from the 100 at Calgary Expo before and as a fan of the show, I want that to happen!

I want you to keep in mind, this isn’t a complaint. I love Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo and will always enjoy visiting the show. For me, I’ve always loved seeing the show as a whole, visiting vendors, seeing the amazingly talented cosplayers wandering the halls and just having fun travelling to the Expo with my group. These are just my thoughts on some quality guests that would round out the experience.

What about you? What guests would you love to see make an appearance at Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo this year?

Thoughts of the Day – Save Monopoly’s Scottie Dog!!

I want the Scottie dog to be part of Monopoly history for years to come.

But Scottie’s place in the game could be at risk with the ongoing Vote Monopoly contest, with 65 different pieces in the running to be a part of the board game.

I’m all about keeping the Scottie dog in the game of Monopoly. That dog is a champion, much like other great dogs… Like Lassie… Beethoven… and the Littlest Hobo.

Help me keep the Scottie dog in the game through http://www.votemonopoly.com. Support the cat too while you are at it!

Calgary Expo 2017 Fast Approaches!

The Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo is one of the biggest events of the year for me. In a lot of ways, it’s like Nerd Christmas… It only comes once a year, it results in lots of gifts being bought by all and there’s lots of scantily clad women in costumes (guess that’s more like Nerd Halloween.)

Holiday comparisons aside, I love covering the Calgary Expo every year and this year is no different. A big change this year is I plan on taking my entire family with me instead of treating the Expo weekend as a guy road trip, so less Final Fantasy XV and more The Incredibles this time around.

This change has made me think of what draws me in every year and if that changes this time around with my son and daughters in tow. I can happily say most of what I enjoy remains intact, but see for yourself!

THE GUEST LIST

While my kids won’t understand who have of the people coming to the event are, it doesn’t change how exciting guest announcement days can be. I may miss the thrill of weekly announcements, but I can happily see all guest announcement days are pretty much a wash for me. I simply lose all productivity waiting for 10 am to roll around when the first new guest is around. That feeling will never change.

THE SHOPPING

Even more exciting for me is finding out what vendors will be taking part in this year’s show. I honestly look forward to the vendor list reveal as much as celebrity guests.

For me, it’s all about finding out what stores are coming back and then mapping out where I can find my favorite products. The more used game stores, the better!

Also, I like finding the truly unique stores. You never know if you will find a Heroes of the North or a Cyanide and Happiness or even a Rue Morgue in any given year, all unique publications that make for great conversations and even better interviews.

THE HOTEL STAY

As much as I hate spending tons of money to book a hotel, I love getting a change of scenery for a few days.

The past five years, we have stayed at The Executive Royal Hotel for our journey to Calgary, with each having its own unique experience. This year, we are looking to change things up and are hunting for hotels with pools and waterslides and kitchenettes, to make the stay more hospitable for the little ones coming along this time. It’s tough leaving a hotel I’m so familiar with, but sometimes, change is good.

THE PARADE

Last year was the first time I got to experience the Cosplay parade in Calgary and I can’t believe how much fun I missed the first four years. This year, I can’t wait to see my daughter’s reaction to all the costumes walking by. It adds a whole new dynamic to the festivities!

THE COSTUME CONTEST

Last year, my friend and contributed Blaze Dobson got on stage for Calgary’s costume contest for the first time, introducing me to another aspect of Calgary Expo that I had been missing out on. This is where the best of the best cosplayers show their skill and I can’t wait to see how both my daughter and my wife react to this.

THE COSPLAYERS

Yes, I know I said scantily clad women earlier and of course, I am looking forward to that! But it’s not all about lack of clothes, there’s a lot more effort than I can pull off that goes into making these costumes and I look forward to seeing all the creativity that goes into it.

But more importantly, I know my daughter is set to be amazed as she sees some of her favorite characters come to life. I can’t wait to see how she reacts when she sees her first Elsa or Princess Peach or Pikachu or My Little Pony or Foxy from FNAF (yes, that list of characters suddenly took a dark turn). It will be a time of wonder for her and I can’t wait to take it all in.

At the same time, my wife has never seen anything like this outside of Halloween and with this being her first convention, this could make for a new experience for her to enjoy!

ARE YOU READY FOR CCEE 2017?

With three months to go, there’s lots of preparations that need to be done, but in truth, I can’t wait for the escape to begin. Calgary Expo is full of hard work for me, but it’s also the one weekend of the year that I can forget my real world responsibilities and just lose myself in need culture.

Expect a lot more coverage on Expo leading up to it and in the month after the event!

Thought of the Day – How did Goat Simulator ever become popular!?

Why Goat Simulator??

Seriously, I’d love to know where the brainchild for this game come from and why it became so stupidly popular?

I’m not the biggest fan of Goat Simulator and think the game is annoying, but what do you think? Do you like the game? Or do you think Goats are evil spawns of Satan?

Thoughts of the Day – Why Dead Island Retro Rampage is worth your time

Today, we look at a cheap, but fun game for the XBox One called Dead Island: Retro Revenge.

I’ve never been a big fan of the Dead Island series. I don’t know why, but I could never get into them, but this game is a lot of fun to play and the price was definitely right.

What are your thoughts on the Dead Island series? Do you like these retro-styled games?

Thoughts of the Day – Back to GameOn Programming

We’re getting back to it at GameOnGNT, putting together content on our channel once again.

Long story short, our main computer for editing content on GameOnGNT is no longer working, which has created some hurdles for getting content out for you to enjoy!

Luckily, we are still able to produce podcasts through Spreaker Studio and can now put together video content through XBox One’s Upload Studio App, so while we have some limited options, its still better than nothing!

We also have plans in the works for a new local project involving a few partners. I can’t say too much yet as we get the details hammered out, but get ready for something new and exciting from us!
